Evidence is mounting that smartphones are destructive to the mental health, educational attainment, and overall well-being of adolescents. The case against smartphones is strengthening and the wisest course vis-a-vis school policy might be to ban smartphones from schools. However, whereas early bans were put in place at the school district or individual school level, some state legislatures have now either passed or proposed statues to institute school bans on smartphones legislatively. There are several reasons to prefer that this decision be left to school districts and individual schools instead of state legislatures.
